THE  CAMP  FOCUS THESE IMPROVEMENT AREAS:

Hand Placement

We begin with the basic placement of the shooting hand and the guide hand. While this technique is the same for the vast majority of shooters, we do adapt for athletes with specific physical needs. For instance, if a player has a unique natural wrist angle, we will slightly modify their hand placement to ensure a fluid motion.

Shooting Pocket & Alignment

  • The Shooting Pocket: This is the starting point of the shot. A player’s pocket will vary based on their age, strength, and skill level.

  • Alignment: This is arguably the most important part of the shot. Once a shooter establishes a good center of gravity, their hand and elbow must be aligned with their shoulder, which must remain square to the basket.

Coaching Note: Younger athletes often struggle to keep their elbows tucked on long-range shots due to a lack of upper-body strength. However, they can maintain perfect alignment during “form shooting.” Establishing this habit now is a primary goal of our February camp.

Release Point

The release point is the specific moment the ball leaves the fingertips. An improper release is the leading cause of “flat” shots with no rotation. We will work extensively on timing the release to ensure the ball has the trajectory needed to score consistently.

Follow-Through

Proper forearm and hand technique during the follow-through creates the backspin necessary for a “shooter’s touch.” This rotation allows the ball to catch the rim or backboard at the right angle to drop in.

Through focused drills and specific homework assignments, we instill the four pillars of a great shooter:

  1. Balance

  2. Eye contact with the rim

  3. Elbow position

  4. Follow-through
